I’m a Tesco Clubcard convert and this is how much better my life is

Anyone who has shopped in Tesco will be familiar with the big yellow labels advertising Clubcard prices that have appeared this year.

The supermarket has been running its scheme for as long as I can remember, as a kid my dad would swipe his Clubcard after the weekly shop to collect his points.

Back then, it was more about collecting the Clubcard points which would equate to money back off future shops and vouchers to use on specific products.

Having always shopped around supermarkets and never committed to one, I had never felt the need to sign up to any supermarket points scheme after fleeing the nest.

However, earlier this year I started to notice big yellow labels starting to pop up in Tesco stores.

The supermarket had started to push discount prices for Clubcard members, regardless of the number of points they had racked up on their account.

Signing up to the scheme seemed to be a no brainer – it was free and I'd immediately start saving money on products.

Tesco's Clubcard scheme gives customers access to cut prices

I created a Clubcard account in February of this year and it's something I've grown to use regularly.

More and more Tesco seem to be adding Clubcard discounts to products.

Before there just seemed to be a few peppered around the store but today there's more like a dozen in every aisle.

I understand people's reservations to sign up to the scheme. The account creation process can seem like a faff and people are keen to protect their data.

What's more, with so many Clubcard reductions now in store, the reduced price is slowly becoming the normal fee, with non-reduced items beginning to seem overpriced.

What was a Clubcard card, is now an app

However, even if I am one of the customers who have been pressured into signing up, I certainly have no regrets.

I went down to my local Tesco, armed with my Clubcard, to demonstrate the type of deals available.

Before picking my products, it's worth mentioning that you have to have a Clubcard to use the Scan & Go feature in store.

This is the system that allows you to scan products and bag them immediately as you shop, saving time at the checkout.

At other stores, such as Asda, customers need just enter their mobile number to use the scanner but it's another way Tesco is trying to get customers signing up to the Clubcard.

Savings

I spent £11.50 in total on eight items which, without the Clubcard, would have set me back £17.05, a total of £5.55 of savings.

Strawberries and blueberries were £2 a punnet or two for £3 for Clubcard users.

A Tesco's own pizza was half price at £1.75 and a box of Cheerios were £2 instead of £3 both thanks to the card.

There were also gains to be made on Jaffa Cakes, a twin pack costing just one pound.

When it comes to more basic items like bread and milk, Tesco hasn't dropped the price for Clubcard users yet.

However, with these items, and everyday products such as toothpaste, the price reductions kick in if you target the higher-priced and branded goods – a tube of Colgate crystals toothpaste reduced from £3 to £2.50, for instance.

Whatever your opinion of Tesco's new Clubcard scheme, and as more and more products are reduced I too question whether I am getting a good deal or simply not paying a higher price, the system is free and accessible to all.

As far as I see, there wouldn't be any harm downloading the app and giving it a try.
