We asked you how you would waste less water and save our local environment – and the response has been great.

Ever since Affinity Water announced its Save Our Streams campaign, people have been thinking about how they can do their bit to preserve these natural wonders, which provide so much of the water they use around the home. Already, over 120,000 Affinity Water customers have signed up to the campaign and ordered water-saving gadgets, saving more than 5 million litres of water a day.

A third of people have now pledged to turn off the tap when they’re cleaning their teeth. This is such a simple habit to get into – because you don’t need to keep the water flowing as you brush – but it can save a whopping 6,500 litres a year.

An immediate step you can take to waste less water, spend less money and save your local streams is to sign up and claim free water saving gadgets at SaveOurStreams.co.uk.

By taking a quick five-minute survey you can find out your household usage, plus order devices to help you reduce it and book a home water efficiency check to ensure you aren’t wasting water with leaky loos and taps – none of which will cost you a penny.

Another popular pledge is to reduce shower time to four minutes. It’s a great way to help because not only does a shower use less water than a bath, but aiming for a four-minute limit can save up to 15 litres of water each time.

Other simple switches include using a watering can instead of a hose to keep your garden hydrated. Did you know your humble garden hose uses as much water in an hour as the average family of four uses in a day-and-a-half? No wonder so many people are pledging to turn theirs off.

Make sure you have a full load before using the dishwasher

And 20 per cent of people said they’ll save water by using the dishwasher only for a full load. You can also look for the eco setting on your dishwasher and washing machine to do your bit.

These pledges are all part of Affinity Water’s mission to Save Our Streams, the aim of which is to protect our precious chalk streams – and thousands of people in your area are already getting involved.

Chalk streams are some of the most beautiful, mineral-rich stretches of water on the planet, and they’re home to wildlife including kingfishers, mayfly and otters. But they don’t deal well with the heat and in the summer months they’re at risk of drying out, which is why we need to act now to protect them.
