Kent's humble seaside location of Sandgate has been named the UK's top trending UK seaside destination for Brits this summer.

The village near Folkestone has earned the title thanks to its beautiful beaches, selection of restaurants and picturesque architecture.

In Sandgate, there are also attractions such as Sandgate Castle and a number of nearby coastal walks.

The accolade was awarded by travel website Airbnb, which compared the growth in search terms.

The Kent village claimed first place, beating hot competition from around the country.

Second and third place were both awarded to Lincolnshire staycation locations, Ingoldmells and Sandilands.

Amanda Cupples, General Manager for Northern Europe at Airbnb said: "There's nothing quite like the smell of fish and chips and the sound of seagulls to transport you straight into holiday mode, and this past year has seen a real resurgence of the great British seaside holiday.

Colourful houses are a feature

"And it's not just the familiar summer stalwarts that are feeling the love; this hotlist shows that Brits are exploring lesser-known destinations and favouring well-loved gems as a means of escape this summer."

Staycations are on the rise in popularity again this year as the Covid pandemic makes travelling abroad this summer harder than in 2020.

Holidaymakers are having to pay for extra COVID tests to travel to countries on the government's lengthy amber and red list, convincing many to stay in the UK.

Sandgate Castle has survived centuries of coastal erosion

Accumulate Capital recently reported that 73% of Brits would be opting for UK staycations rather than trips abroad this year.

For that reason, Airbnb stays have become hot property as the public look to find hidden seaside gems to visit this summer.
