The A2 near Dover has been closed due to a serious accident involving two lorries.

An accident on the Whitfield roundabout has closed the road in both directions up to Lydden Hill, and Highways England have announced that a diversion is now in place.

The road is closed specifically between the A260 (Lydden Hill) and the A256 West (Whitfield).

The closure is expected to keep the stretch closed for much of today, meaning that any motorists travelling in the area should make extra time allowances for travel.

Emergency services including Kent Police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service are among the emergency services in attendance.

Highways England contractors will also be providing assistance with traffic management on scene.

A Highways England statement on the diversion reads:

"Traffic approaching the closure locally is being diverted via local roads through Lydden.

"Traffic travelling from further afield and heading towards Dover should use the M25 and M20 to avoid the area.

"Please allow extra time for your journey if you're travelling in the area this morning.

"Due to the nature of the incident, it is anticipated that the road will be closed for some time."
