The motorway was subsequently closed in both directions between J1A and J2.
Traffic has been at a standstill for most of the afternoon, with queues stretching for miles.

Further delays have been caused by debris across the motorway after a bridge was reportedly struck in the crash.
The emergency services said they are working tirelessly in the scorching temperatures to clear the incident.
Meanwhile, people have spilled onto the motorway to escape the sweltering heat inside their cars.
There are 90 minute delays and traffic is not expected to return to normal until at least 7pm, according to Highways England.
