The five Ashford GPs that have been rated 'Outstanding' can be revealed – and this is what inspectors had to say about them.

Independent inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) regularly visit GPs to find out whether the service is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

There are four ratings given to health and social care services – these are Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and Inadequate.

These five GPs have gone above and beyond to help their patients and we've found out why inspectors were so impressed with the practices when they paid them a visit.

The inspectors said: "There was a clear leadership structure and staff felt supported by management.

"The practice proactively sought feedback from staff and patients, which it acted on.

"Wye Surgery was one of the first practices chosen to roll out this service.

"For example, the CommunityTele-Dermatology service which had reduced referrals by 40%. The practice was proactive in reducing medicines waste."

The inspectors wrote: "Patients said they found it easy to make an appointment with a named GP and there was continuity of care, with urgent appointments available the same day.

"The practice had good facilities and was well equipped to treat patients and meet their needs.

"The practice proactively sought feedback from staff and patients, which it acted on."

The inspectors explained: "The practice offered an extensive range of additional services, providing secondary care closer to home, achieving significant auditable results, benefits and improved outcomes for patients.

"It reached out to the community and worked in close and constructive partnership with local hospital consultants.

"Services included a full muscular-skeletal service, Cardiology,Ear, Nose and Throat, (including Paediatrics) and vasectomy."

The inspectors said: "The practice offered a community ‘virtual’ ward which met once a fortnight.

"Team members included GPs, an elderly care consultant, social care staff, community nurses and representatives from the voluntary sector.

"The aim of the virtual ward was to help to ensure that patients’ emotional and social needs were met and given equal importance."

They added: "The practice had recognised the needs of its local, rural community and the difficulty in collection of prescriptions and had organised a secure collection point in two local villages located more than five miles (8km) from the practice."

The inspectors wrote: "The practice had clear systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen.

"When incidents did happen, the practice learned from them and improved their processes.

"The practice routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided.

"It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence- based guidelines.

"Staff involved and treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect."
