Roads in and around Sandwich will be closed when one of the biggest sporting events happens in the county this week.

Crowds of up to 32,000 are expected on each of the 149th Open Golf Championship days, which will run at the Royal St George’s Golf Course in Sandwich, according to Kent police.

The tournament, which will see players from all over the world compete for the Claret Jug, will run from Sunday (July 11) to Sunday (July 18).

Kent County Council (KCC) will close some roads in Sandwich, Deal and surrounding areas to "ensure smooth traffic flows and minimise congestion".

Below are the nine roads that will be closed, with access maintained for permit holders where applicable:

  • Golf Road, Deal – between Ethelbert Road and Guilford Road
  • Ancient Highway, Sandwich Bay

  • Guilford Road, Sandwich Bay

  • Canterbury Road West, Cliffsend – from Cliffsend Roundabout eastwards to the western boundary of number 54

Seven roads will become one-way only and, on some of them, the direction of travel will be reversed during the day.
