Kent author Jojo Moyes has been praised for her “incredible” donation to charity Saving Suffering Strays (SSS).
Moyes, author of Me Before You, donated enough to the charity to fund 20 dogs to be transported from the streets in Bosnia in the hopes of finding their forever homes.
SSS, a charity that helps rescue stray dogs across the UK and Europe, said on Twitter that it wanted to say "the biggest thank you", Team Dogs reports.
It said: “Saving Suffering Strays would like to thank Jojo Moyes for the incredible personal donation that funded in full the costs to transport 20 of our dogs saved from the hell of the streets and public shelters in Bosnia, to new homes waiting for them.”
The charity was created in 2012, inspired by Milena Malesevic, who has been rescuing strays from the streets of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina for more than 20 years, saving over 1,000 dogs.
During the Bosnian war from 1992 to 1995, many people could no longer care for their pets, and as a result, dogs ended up on the streets, leading to many becoming vulnerable without homes or in public shelters to this day.
As well as the donation, Moyes, from Maidstone, adopted a dog named Blane from the charity, who will join her other rescue Sisu, who she adopted from SSS in 2019.
“We are overwhelmed by Jojo's generosity and for caring so deeply for these dogs,” SSS said.
“Blane will join her family which includes former SSStrays dog, Sisu. Jojo helped change the lives of these dogs forever.”
