The 10 dirty Thanet beaches to avoid after sewage pump incident

Kent locals are being urged to stay away from a number of Thanet beaches after a sewage leak.

Margate Wastewater Pumping Station was struck by lightning overnight on Thursday June 17.

The incident caused wastewater to be released via the emergency outfall of the Southern Water pumping station at Foreness.

Southern Water was alerted to the spillage and has provided a list of bays to avoid until further notice.

Beaches between West Bay and Joss Bay are affected and signage systems are in place to alert beach users.

Southern Water has confirmed that the pumping station is now operating as normal. and is being closely monitored.

A beach cleanup is currently underway and the Environment Agency will complete water quality tests in due course.

Images of the storms hitting Kent's coast early on Thursday June 17 looked almost surreal.

Thanet district council have promised to give further updates on their website in due course.

Earlier this week Kent beaches were teeming with local and British tourists who flocked to the coasts as the country basked in a heatwave.

That tropical weather came to a dramatic end on Wednesday evenings as the rain began to fall.

The temperamental weather is set to continue into next week before the heat returns once again.
