Kent is set to continue it's path of slow and careful reopening next week, as May 17 brings the return of indoor dining, entertainment and overnight stays at other people's homes.
Headline reopenings of shops and restaurants aside, there are other aspects of our everyday lives that have been changed by COVID-19 that will steadily be returning to regular operation too.
Much like many other public services, Kent and Medway's waste recycling and disposal centres have been operating under an adjusted system during the pandemic.
Bookings have been in place since May 2020, as residents need to plan ahead before they take their rubbish to the tip.

As other public facilities reopen fully, such as indoor sporting facilities and face masks no longer being mandatory in schools, it would make a lot of sense that rules for waste disposal are also set for some changes.
So here is the full list of things to keep in mind when you visit the tip after May 17.
Recycling Center Rules
Many rules will stay largely unchanged, as regular COVID-safe operation continues.
All centres across Kent are remaining open seven days a week, with a total number of over 39,760 booking slots available.
These can be booked a month in advance, and through the booking process you can amend the time and date of these bookings.
You can also choose a booking slot before entering your contact and vehicle details.
However, you still have to adhere to the coronavirus safety rules at the tip, even as lockdown eases.
There is no update on how long this booking system will remain in place, with no official updates coming from Kent County Council or Medway Borough Council.
Centres are open from 8:30am to 3:45pm, with booking slots as follows:
- 8:30am to 9:45am
- 10am to 11:15am
- 11:30am to 12:45pm
- 1pm to 2:15pm
- 2:30pm to 3:45pm
Slots can be booked here.
When visiting, you:
- must have your booking reference number. You can display this via your phone or printed/ written down on a piece of paper
- are advised to wear a pair of gloves (garden, latex, rubber etc). We also advise you to wear a face covering/mask to limit the risk of infection. Gloves and masks must be disposed of at home
- must only attend the site once within your booking slot and cannot revisit. If you miss your slot, you may not be permitted to use the site on this occasion.
Who can visit
You can bring one other person from your own household with you to assist with unloading items, but this is at staff discretion.
If you have no option but to bring children with you, they must always stay in the vehicle.
COVID-19 affected waste
If you are disposing of waste contaminated or potentially contaminated with COVID-19, please:
- double bag the material
- store the bag securely for 72 hours.
You must follow the above before bringing this waste to the centre or putting it out for kerbside collection.
