The Charity Commission has today launched enquiries into the Howletts Wild Animal Trust and the Aspinall Foundation.
The commission has signalled the start of the investigation following ‘serious concerns’ about both charities ‘governance and financial management’
Both Howletts Trust and Aspinall Foundation have a number of trustees in common but are separate entities.
Both enquiries will examine a number of ‘concerns’ surrounding the charities governance.

A notice, published on the Government website today outlined why the enquiries had been launched.
The Charity regulator has been looking in to the Howletts Wild Animal Trust since December 2019 after concerns about the charity’s management of conflicts of interest and a related-party transaction.
However The Commission still ‘has concern;s about related party transactions, meaning that it is ‘now necessary to examine these issues’ as part of a formal statutory inquiry.
The enquiry will further examine the administration, governance and management of the Charity by the trustees as well whether or not the trustees have complied with and fulfilled their duties and responsibilities under charity law.
The inquiry into the Aspinall Foundation comes after the regulator began examining the charity in July 2020 over concerns about the management of conflicts of interest and related-party transactions.
The new enquiry will be examining the administration, governance and management of the charity by the trustees with specific regard to how conflicts of interest have been dealt with and managed.
It will also look at whether or not there has been any unauthorised trustee benefit; and whether or not the trustees have complied with and fulfilled their duties and responsibilities under charity law.
The opening of an inquiry is not a finding of wrongdoing.
