People in the Dover district said they were woken to the sounds of "loud bangs" and "huge explosions" thinking World War 3 had started.
Lydden residents said the whole village had been woken before 6am today (March 24) by the commotion,
Several people called the police and were reportedly told it was due to activity in a nearby Ministry of Defence (MOD) training area.
As well as the explosion sounds, some locals reported what sounded like gunfire continuing for a significant period after.
KentLive has approached the Ministry of Defence for comment.
Most residents have only complained that they weren't given prior warning if it was MoD activity.
While others were surprised by how far and wide the disturbance reached.
People described the noises as a "series of huge explosions".
Others reported that police said they did not know what it was when called and have begun patrols.
